Parenthood...it changes everything!
This might be something that you cannot understand if you don't have children, but anything your kids are involved in is extremely important to you as a parent. I am the father of two young boys. Anytime there is any risk to their physical or emotional well- being, I go through an intense range of emotions. There is something about knowing I'm responsible for another life that makes me feel being a parent is the first truly unselfish thing I've ever done.
When my older son was very young, under a year old, he experienced Fibral Seizures. Fibral seizures are fever-induced seizures that occur in infants and toddlers. The first time he had one of these, I was away on a business trip. I flew home that night in a panic after receiving a frantic phone call from my wife telling me what had happened.
That was the longest flight of my life. The hardest part of the flight was not knowing what was happening with my son while I was in the air. Not being able to communicate and find out what was going on was a difficult feeling to withstand. I wanted to be able to pick up the phone and find out he was okay.
When each of my boys first started school, it was very difficult for my wife and I to let go. We loved and trusted his teacher, but it took us some time to get over that feeling of panic all parents feel when we don't know what's going with our children.
When it comes to your children, you want to speak to a human being. You don't want an email. You certainly don't want a text. A photocopied notice in their backpack isn't enough. You want to have a conversation with another human being about your child and what is best for him or her.
When I call my children's school I don't want to hear the T-1 is down, the building lost power, or we had an equipment problem. I want to talk to someone. I want to feel I'm important, my phone call is important and I'm getting the attention I require and deserve.
For years now M5's solution wasn't always a good fit for schools and libraries. This always bummed me out. As a parent, I know the ability to reach a live person, no matter what the circumstances, is hugely important to me. I wanted my company to provide that to other parents, teachers and school administrators.
So I am happy to that M5 is officially E-rate certified. Schools and libraries using M5 solution can get all of the redundancy inherent in a hosted solution, but because it's a service the government will pay up to 90% of the bill, which is pretty cool.
