PCBs in Building Caulk

At one time caulk was manufactured to contain PCBs because they imparted flexibility. PCB-containing caulk was used as a joint sealant in various architectural applications, including around windows, and masonry expansion joints.

It is known that caulk containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was used in some buildings, including schools, in the 1950s through the 1970s. Buildings built after 1980 are less likely to contain caulk that contains PCBs. Caulk is a flexible material used to seal gaps to make windows, masonry and joints in buildings and other structures watertight or airtight. To date it has been found in buildings in the northeastern United States and in joints in concrete water storage basins in the western United States.

* If you believe the caulk in your school or building was manufactured before 1978, when PCBs were banned, you may wish to have the caulk tested by a chemical analysis laboratory.

* If PCBs are found in the caulk, avoid regular touching of the caulk, clean it up properly and safely, and make plans to remove the caulk.

* When PCB-containing caulk is removed and disposed of, it should be done with care to avoid contamination of surrounding materials such as floors, wood, bricks, mortar or soil.

Asbestos Abatement of a Former Manufacturing Facility by The MACK Group, LLC

The MACK Group, LLC ( website http://www.mackgrp.com  ) completed the asbestos abatement of a large former factory located in Newark, New Jersey. 

The project consisted primarily of the asbestos abatement of 100,000 sf of asbestos roofing and flashing.  Asbestos materials were removed from the structures prior to the demolition of the former factory.  Although the factory was abandoned, an active community surrounded the site. 

The Mack Group, LLC took special care to have fencing installed and utilize cones and barricades for public safety purposes.  The developer eventually plans to redevelop the property for future housing.

The MACK Group, LLC accomplished this asbestos project on schedule and without injury.

Fast Track Asbestos Flooring and Roofing Project Completed by The MACK Group, LLC

The MACK Group, LLC, a premier asbestos abatement and flooring removal contractor, recently completed a commercial asbestos abatement project that consisted of the removal of asbestos floor tile, associated mastic and roofing materials. The project needed to be completed on a very fast schedule in order to facilitate the client’s need to demolish the facility as quick as possible.

Prior to asbestos abatement activities, a 10 day notification was submitted which is a written notification of intention to perform asbestos abatement in accordance with 40 CFR 61.145 to 61.155 and N.J.A.C. 7:26-2.12(d) and (e). All utilities were also disconnected. The project conformed to all OSHA and EPA regulations pertaining to ACM and only NJ licensed asbestos abatement workers performed the asbestos removal work.

The MACK Group, LLC (MACK) was contracted to remove and abate asbestos containing floor tile and mastic that was adhered to a concrete floor. The estimated quantity of asbestos containing floor tile and mastic that needed to be abated and removed was 22,000 square feet. To remove the asbestos floor tile and mastic, MACK used a combination of proprietary flooring removal machines that they own in their fleet of abatement equipment. The flooring removal machines have zero emissions and fumes allowing for use in restricted ventilation areas. These machines allowed MACK to easily remove the floor tile and mastic down to the original concrete floor surface without damaging the existing concrete.

In addition, MACK also performed the asbestos abatement of 22,000 square feet of roofing materials. The roofing material was abated under wet methods and the removed materials were placed into a sealed container.

The transportation of the removed asbestos floor tile and mastic was in accordance with N.J.A.C. 7:26-3.5(d) and by registered New Jersey solid waste vehicles. ACM was then properly disposed at an EPA licensed landfill. Finally, all required OSHA air monitoring, notifications, and all required final air testing was conducted.

In order to facilitate the client’s need for a fast turnaround, the MACK employed double shifts which allowed the project to be completed in three (3) weeks.

The project was completed without incident or injury.
